Celebrating chet baker
A fairy tale of RESURRECTING magic
More than 30 years ago in London, The John Horler Trio played six consecutive nights as the rhythm section for the legendary Chet Baker. These landmark performances were recorded for personal use and managed to capture the raw, live excitement of those highly memorable evenings.
Three decades later, the original tapes have been meticulously restored and have been released as a two CD set, Chet Baker Live in London, in 2016. The album launch was hosted at Ronnie Scott’s to a sold out crowd for two consecutive evenings.
For the shows at Ronnie Scott's, The John Horler Trio was reunited for the first time since those Chet Baker shows from 1983. Their repertoire consists of classic songs associated with Chet, including Have You Met Miss Jones, Beatrice, The Touch of Your Lips, I Remember You and My Funny Valentine. The line-up for these shows was:
John Horler: Piano
Jim Richardson: Bass
Tony Mann: Drums
And joining the Trio on those evenings were:
Quentin Collins: Trumpet
Leo Richardson: Saxophone
Special Guest Norma Winstone: Vocals
Collectively, the musicians had performed and recorded with the greatest, including Bob Brookmeyer, Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Art Farmer, Pepper Adams, Bud Shank, Shorty Rodgers, Peter King, John Dankworth, Cleo Laine, Kenny Wheeler, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Stitt, Esther Phillips, Charles McPherson, Benny Carter, Marion McPartland, Herb Ellis, John Taylor, Stan Tracey and even Ronnie Scott himself!
Quentin Collins had a distinction of playing trumpet and assuming the role of MD. Collins has established himself as one of the UK’s best, having performed, toured and recorded with internationally renowned artists across many genres. Most recently, these include Gregory Porter, Mark Ronson, Kyle Eastwood, Omar, Roy Ayers and Alicia Keys.
As a result of the success of these shows, this quintet subsequently performed at The Cockpit Theatre in London, headlining the immensely popular monthly series, Jazz in The Round, to a sold out audience.
By popular demand, plans are under way to take this Celebrating Chet Baker tribute project on the road, with a UK tour, Switzerland dates and Paris shows in 2017.
